Facebook Launches Free Internet App for Africa

Facebook has just revealed its first mobile app that will help Africans get online free via its initiative internet.org which was launched last year to help developing countries have access to cheap internet.

The initiative is first releasing its first
app in Zambia, the app is currently android base, it gives free access to cool internet base web services totally free.

The app will allow users have access to online web services like:
• Wikipedia
• Google search
• Facebook
• AccuWeather
• Go Zambia Jobs
• Kokoliko
• MAMA (Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action)
• Messenger
• WRAPP (Women's Rights App) and

Facebook's boss said in his post that"Right now, only 15% of people in Zambia have access to the internet. Soon, everyone will be able to use the internet for free to find jobs, get help with reproductive health and other aspects of health, and use tools like Facebook to stay connected with the people they love."

But currently the free internet access will be for only Airtel Africa customers in Zambia.

Nigerians will be waiting patiently for this awesome service.

I think Globacom will be the best company to partner with Facebook on this initiative in Nigeria, what do you guys think?

Facebook launches service to send real life gifts to Friends

Facebook launches service to send real life gifts to Friends

Facebook launches service to send real-life gifts to Friends
Facebook is rolling out a service called Gifts which, as its name suggests, lets users send chocolate, coffee, socks and other real-life presents to one another.
Facebook Gifts launched Thursday to a subset of users in the U.S. and will roll out to more over the coming months as people begin to send gifts to each other.

Users will be able to click on a "gifts" icon on their Facebook friends pages on Facebooks website or on Android mobile phones. (iPhone and iPad versions are coming soon.)

The icon will also show up on the right side of users Facebook pages with the notifications for friends birthdays, weddings and other life events. For example, if your friends birthday is coming up in two days, youll now see a "give her a gift" link and the gift icon next to her name and photo.

Clicking the icon will display presents you can buy, such as a Starbucks gift card, cupcakes or a teddy bear.

The recipient will be notified through Facebook to enter a shipping address for the presents. In some cases, theyll be able to select their own cupcake flavors or size and style of socks. They can also exchange gifts for other items if they dont like chocolate or dont wear socks.

The move represents Facebook Inc.s first real foray into e-commerce. The company will take an unspecified cut from each item sold. On Thursday, possible gifts included gourmet ice cream, Andy Warhol prints, flowers, organic dog toys and spa packages.

Facebook Gifts is the result of Facebooks acquisition of Karma, a 16-person startup based in San Francisco. Facebook bought the company on May 18, the day of its rocky initial public offering. Karmas mobile app let people send gifts to their friends on the go. Facebook Gifts, of course, works both on computers and mobile devices.

Lee Linden, the former head of Karma, is now head product manager for Facebook Gifts, which he says incorporates "the heart and soul of the Karma experience."

"We think gifting is a form of communication," he said.

Facebook Launches Free Voice Call App in UK

Facebook Launches Free Voice Call App in UK

Facebook has launched free voice calling as part of its iOS Messenger app in the UK
The service debuted in North America in January this year but has now been added to the UK versions of Facebook Messenger on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
To use the service, navigate to the required contact and select the "i" icon in the top right hand corner and then click on the Free Call option. If the person is unavailable or not using the service the option is greyed out. The system supports international calling, meaning a UK user can now freely chat to a US-based friend.
"When you call, your friend will get a notification and hear a ringtone if they have their phones volume on," said a Facebook representative. "They can swipe through the notification or open Messenger to answer your call. If they miss the call, they will see a note when they return to the conversation indicating that you tried to reach them."
Free Call is a VoIP service, similar to Skype, meaning that the app uses your devices internet connection to route the call rather than a traditional telephone network. The service is reportedly only available on iOS devices. There is no official information regarding the rollout of an Android version at the current time.
