Facebook Launches Free Internet App for Africa
Facebook has just revealed its first mobile app that will help Africans get online free via its initiative internet.org which was launched last year to help developing countries have access to cheap internet.
The initiative is first releasing its first
app in Zambia, the app is currently android base, it gives free access to cool internet base web services totally free.
The app will allow users have access to online web services like:
• Wikipedia
• Google search
• AccuWeather
• Go Zambia Jobs
• Kokoliko
• MAMA (Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action)
• Messenger
• WRAPP (Women's Rights App) and
• Zambia Report
Facebook's boss said in his post that"Right now, only 15% of people in Zambia have access to the internet. Soon, everyone will be able to use the internet for free to find jobs, get help with reproductive health and other aspects of health, and use tools like Facebook to stay connected with the people they love."
But currently the free internet access will be for only Airtel Africa customers in Zambia.
Nigerians will be waiting patiently for this awesome service.
I think Globacom will be the best company to partner with Facebook on this initiative in Nigeria, what do you guys think?

Facebook founder others unveil plan to widen global Internet access
FOUNDER of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, has unveiled a
campaign with global technology giants to connect billions
of people worldwide who lack access to the Internet.
A report by Agence France Presse (AFP) called the project
Internet.org. Its goal is to extend Internet access to five
billion people by cutting the cost of smartphone-based
Internet services in developing countries.
“There is no guarantee that most people will ever have
access to the Internet. It isn’t going to happen by itself,”
Zuckerberg, the 29-year-old billionaire founder of the
popular social network said in a statement.
“But I believe connectivity is a human right, and that if we
work together, we can make it a reality.”
Other partners in the project are Finland-based Nokia,
Sweden’s Ericsson, Samsung of South Korea, U.S.-based
Qualcomm, MediaTek of Taiwan and Norway’s Opera. U.S.-
based social networks Twitter and LinkedIn are also due to
sign up.
The organisers said some 2.7 billion people – just over a
third of the world’s population – have access to the Internet
today, and the number of new users is growing only slowly
each year.
“The goal of Internet.org is to make Internet access
available to the two-thirds of the world who are not yet
connected, and to bring the same opportunities to everyone
that the connected third of the world has today,” they said
in a statement.
The seven founding partners are going to develop joint
projects, share knowledge and mobilise governments and
industry to bring the world online.
Specifically, they want to simplify mobile apps to make
them more efficient and improve telephone components
and networks so they perform better while consuming less
energy.
They also want to develop lower-cost, higher-quality
smartphones and partnerships to more broadly deploy
Internet access in underserved communities.
Zuckerberg insisted in an interview with Cable News
Network (CNN) that the project was not simply aimed at
generating more customers.
“If we were just focused on making money, the first billion
people we’ve connected have way more money than the rest
of the next six billion combined. It’s not fair but it’s the way
that it is,” he said.
The partnership resembles one launched by Facebook in
2011 called Open Compute Project, which aims to improve
the materials used in call centers and make them less
energy-hungry.
That project was originally met with skepticism but has
gradually won over the major players in the computer
industry.
The latest plan marks an expansion in Zuckerberg’s interest
in public policy, months after he launched the advocacy
group Fwd.us to lobby for U.S. immigration and education
reform along with support for scientific research.
The new thrust comes at a key time for tech groups. Mature
markets are saturated, while poor regions have vast and
growing reservoirs of potential new customers.
“The Internet not only connects us to our friends, families
and communities, but it is also the foundation of the global
knowledge economy,” Zuckerberg said.
“By bringing everyone online, we’ll not only improve
billions of lives, but we’ll also improve our own as we
benefit from the ideas and productivity they contribute to
the world.”
His comments were echoed by heads of other companies
taking part in the initiative.
“We are committed to shaping the Networked Society —
where everyone and everything will be connected in real
time; creating the freedom, empowerment and opportunity
to transform society,” Hans Vestberg, president and chief
executive of Ericsson, said
MK Tsai, chairman of MediaTek, said: “Global Internet and
social media access represent the biggest shift since the
industrial revolution, and we want to make it all inclusive.”

An non-profit American organization called "Media Development Investment Fund" ??(MDIF) is planning to offer free wireless Internet for all the inhabitants of the earth using hundreds ?of mini-satellites.?
The idea of the ambitious project, which it called "Outernet", based on the release of ?hundreds of satellites thumbnail to low-Earth orbit, where each satellite receives the data from ?several hundred ground stations, then re- broadcast it via radio frequencies to phones ?and computers around the world.?
This project - which will be launched by June 2015 - will enable the citizens of countries which its governments impose censorship on the Internet - such as China and North Korea - from unrestricted and open access to the Internet.
The company says it will be able to broadcast the Internet to all regions of the world, even remote ones, and the project will cost tens of millions of dollars, which seeks to collect it through donations and grants .
At the beginning, the company revealed that it will broadcast the Internet to people who are unable to access to the World Wide Web, to be broadcast in one direction from the satellite to the user, but stressed that the ultimate goal is to provide two-way broadcast in future phase of the project.
The Internet content, which available to browse through the "Outernet" network, will include news from different media platforms, and information from web sites such as Wikipedia, and applications such as OpenStreetMap, in addition to music, games and movies , along with free educational courses.
The company will begin in next June develop and test experimental model of satellites that will be used in the project, and then will continue to work on the project in the next year, up to the date of the launch and broadcast in June 2015.

For many people they buy their computers with the Windows OS installed and bundled with whatever version of windows they have is Internet Explorer. For many people, they see no reason why they should change their browser (Internet Explorer). Similarly, most people see no reason why they should use anything other than the default Windows Media Player. If you are such person who use Internet Explorer and see no reason why you should move to Mozilla Firefox, read on and find out why you should so, fast.
First let me give you some stats. Internet Explorer is the leading browser with a market share of about 66.1%. This majority is not surprising considering that Internet Explorer comes with every Windows OS. In second position is Firefox with about 22.5%. These are April figures and are compiled by Net Applications In. a company that tracks web browsers and has been doing that since 2005. However, according to the company, Firefox has been gaining 0.4% of market share every month for the past 12 months. On the other hand Microsoft has been losing 0.7 of the market share every month for the last 12 months. The company forecast that if this trend continues, and there is every reason to believe that it will, Internet Explorer will drop to below 50% by 2011.
Now that I have evidence that indeed people are moving from Internet Explorer to Firefox, let me show you should be one of those people as well. First, the browser has an unlimited number of add on that expands the functionality of the browser to make it by far the most versatile ever. In my case, I have FireFTP which means I can upload files to my website from right inside the browser with no need for third party FTP programs. I also have a download manager add on which means I dont need a separate download manager like Internet Download Manager or Free download Manager. Firefox handles the rest and when I am downloading particularly large files; my download speed can be multiplied by up to nine times. I also have Cooliris which allows me to play media files from right inside the browser without need for a dedicated media player. Some of the add-ons are just exceptional. This includes Xmarks which allows me to synchronise my books across several computers. I can even access my bookmarks over the Internet when using any computer (with Firefox of course). The list of add-ons available for Firefox is inexhaustible and can only be limited by ones imagination. For example, I can send free SMS messages anywhere in the world from my web browser thanks to the SMSalias add-on that I installed.
Another area where Mozilla Firefox soundly beats Internet Explorer is the area of web security. This is mostly because Internet Explorer is tightly integrated with the underlying Windows Operating System. Some companies have even advised their clients to revert back to Internet Explorer 7 due to the security holes in Internet Explorer 8 (http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1051908/security-outfit-calls-roll-ie). On the other hand, Firefox has a number of add on utilities that greatly enhances the security of the browser. These include, in passing, Roboform, which minimises risks of someone getting hold of your passwords when filling out forms. There is also NoScript which prevents malicious code executing itself and launching a phishing attack. There is also AdBlock which greatly frees you from malware. Besides the added functionality of the add-ons, Firefox 3 has Private Browsing, which provides the same functionality and does not retain visited pages, form and search bar entries, passwords, cookies, temporary or cached Internet files, and so forth.
Without the niceties, several tests have proven that JavaScript speed of Firefox 3.5 is about five to ten times faster than that of Internet Explorer 8. Mozilla Firefox even boasts of support for more than 70 languages which is more than that of Internet Explorer. Mozilla Firefox was even the first one to introduce tabbed browsing with Internet Explorer playing catch up. With the release of the new Firefox 3.5 version later on in June, the browser is likely to improve much further. There is even a project of porting Mozilla Firefox to mobile phones, something that Internet Explorer and Opera have had a headstart on. If you really feel that you can’t let go of Internet Explorer and you can’t do without it, you can even run it inside Firefox using the IEtab extension.

The Internet is a vast expanse and there’s a ton of information out there, most of it is legal, while some of it is illegal. Unfortunately, due to a number of reasons, sites that have content that may be in the clear might also get blocked by either the authorities, your ISP or sometimes even your office network administrator. Gaining access can be considered to be a very technical and complicated process, but it really isn’t. We’re going to look at some of these ways to unblock sites. Most of these techniques are really simply, while a couple of others might need more than a minute or two to get running.
Unblocking by changing your DNS server
A DNS server is like an index, with a list of domain names - such as YouTube.com, Tech2.com and pretty much every other site on the Internet. When you type in a website address in your browser, your computer sends a request to the DNS server and it tells you the IP address for that site. One of the easiest ways for ISPs to stop access to a particular site is by removing the entries for the sites that need to be blocked. ISPs can choose to redirect the request to a different site or a notice page as well.

A simple DNS server change could open up your connection However, there is a way around this. There are free, fully open third-party DNS services run by organizations and other ISPs. The most popular ones are run by Google and OpenDNS. All you need to do is change your DNS server settings to theirs. In a typical Windows 7 system, head over to the Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings. Right click on your network adapter, click on Internet Protocol Version 4, click on Properties. Click on the Use the following DNS server addresses and enter the DNS server of your choice. Google’s DNS addresses are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, while OpenDNS’ are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. Click on OK to save the settings and reboot your PC. Using browsing proxies Browsing proxies are services that allow you to use their Internet connection, thus bypassing most of the restrictions setup by the ISPs or the network administrators. There are plenty of these on the Internet that can be accessed through your browser. All you need to do is access them and enter the URL of the site that you want to access in the address bar provided by the site. All the requests will then be channeled through that browsing proxy server.  The only downside to this of course is that if the browsing proxy itself gets blocked by your ISP, you’ll have to find another one. Some of these browsing proxies, depending on how popular they are, can be slow to access. A quick Google search for ‘anonymous browsing proxy’ will give you a long list of services available on the web. |
